Once you have trained your pet to use his new fountain, you will have peace of mind knowing that your pet will have access to fresh, cold, clean water at all times.
No more slime, empty or bug and leaf infested bowls to clean. No bacteria to contend with. No batteries or electrical cords. You are going to be amazed at how much water your pet will now drink.
I have a few hints & tips to make your training period much easier and enjoyable. I was able to train my ten week old puppy in three short days. He has been using his fountain for two years now. If you haven’t seen the three short videos on my website, be sure to do so. They are very cute at the very least.

1.) Be very patient with your pet. Your pet only wants to please you and will work very hard to learn how to use his new fountain. I’ve had feedback where some pets learn the fountain in three days and some take two weeks.
2.) After hooking your new fountain to a water source, be sure to bleed off any air that is still in the hose. Do this by pressing on the paddle until all the air has escaped and you only have a stream of water. Otherwise, you will shoot water 15’ into the air and possibly scare your pet.
2A.) The water stream is designed to shoot up to about 10 inches. If this is to high for your pet, I recommend buying a “wye” connector and hooking it up directly to the fountain. You can then adjust the flow to a lower level. These “wye” connectors can be found at any hardware store such as Lowe’s, Tractor-Supply or Ace Hardware. They cost anywhere from .97 to $7.00.

3.) This fountain is, depending on where you live, a spring/summer/fall product. Be sure to disconnect during frigid/winter weather. Freezing will occur and cause possible damage to fountain and or pipes.

4.) When first training your pet to use the fountain, it will be easier to learn if you can have your pet approach the fountain from the front. One way to do this is to have something on the two sides as well as something on the backside so that your pet can only approach from the front. Once he is fully trained, you can then remove all obstacles. I have my pet in an enclosed pen so I was able to install his fountain up against the fence and I then stacked some firewood on both sides of his fountain. This worked very well.
5.) To get your pet to want to use his new fountain, you will want your pet to be very thirsty. Try running him around the house a few times. Or, have your pet fetch the ball or stick for a few minutes until he/she becomes very thirsty. Have your pet approach the fountain. Push the paddle down with your hand or foot and let your pet start drinking from the fountain. Release the paddle. When your pet tries to drink from the fountain, put his/her front paw or paws on the paddle. Don’t let him/her drink to much at first. Pull him off and then put him/her back on the paddle. Do this several times or until your pet is finished drinking. You will want to wean your pet from the old watering bowl very quickly. Water your pet with the fountain as much as possible. Even if you have to be the one holding the paddle. Your pet will learn very quickly.

Your pet will be very thirsty first thing in the morning, especially if he/she hasn’t had access to water through the night. I found this to be a good time to train. One other training tool that worked pretty well, is to put a little bacon grease, gravy or peanut butter on the fountain cover and or paddle. I trained my puppy starting on Friday after work and worked with him early Saturday morning and through Sunday afternoon. He was fully trained and I was able to leave him in his pen with his fountain knowing he would have clean water at all times, 24/7.
6.) The fountain comes with two springs attached to the inner workings. The fountain will work with only one spring. If you think the paddle is too stiff at first, remove one of the springs until your pet becomes fully confident on the fountain. To get to the inner parts, remove the cover by sticking a small screwdriver or similar tool, through the holes in the side of the brass “nut” on top of the cover. Turn counter clock wise to remove the nut. Remove one spring. Reinstall cover and tighten brass nut. Be careful to not “strip” the nut threads by over tightening.
7.) There are two holes on either side of the base. These holes are for securing purposes. You can secure the fountain to a deck or into the yard by using a bolt, all-thread or a stake.
Note: Check with your local phone, electric, cable, gas company or other utilities before driving anything into the ground. This will be a free service and they will be happy to do it.
Congratulations and thank you again for purchasing the “Original” Doggie-Fountain. Your friends and family will be amazed upon seeing your pet drink from the new fountain.
Also, once you have trained your pet to use the fountain, take a picture of your pet using the fountain, send it to us, and we will be glad to add the picture to our Gallery.
Happy Training,
Tony Lytle
